"To achieve the highest accomplishments we must strive to acquire strong, healthy bodies, and develop our minds" Joseph Pilates
Core-control strengthening is one of the only scientifically proven ways of reducing back pain and discomfort on a long-term basis. (O'Sullivan)
A primary aim of Pilates is to build an efficient central core of stability muscles that stabilise the trunk and spine. This is achieved through both mental and physical training. The mind is trained to become more aware of body position while the deep postural and stability muscles are activated. Muscle imbalances can be corrected through retraining coordinated muscle recruitment patterns which leads to overall improved body alignment. The mind and body are brought together to achieve these aims through the following six principles:
- Centering
- Concentration
- Control
- Precision
- Breathing
- Fluidity
