Neurological Physiotherapy

Neurological Physiotherapy is a specialist form of physiotherapy treatment developed for those people who have suffered damage to their central nervous system i.e. the brain or spinal cord.

These conditions normally result in muscle weakness and tightness, poor co-ordination of movement and posture, reduced sensation, painful joints and fatigue. Commonly these lead to difficulty with moving, standing, walking, balance, reaching and grasping. Ultimately this limits an individual’s ability to complete daily tasks and has a big impact on confidence and independence.

Physiotherapy treatment involves the therapist using their hands to guide movement to regain co-ordination and posture. They use stretches and massage to improve flexibility and exercises to build strength and endurance. Practicing movements and everyday tasks improves functional ability and boosts confidence.

When people move freely with less effort or pain they can live more enjoyable and independent lives. The therapists aim is to maximise  potential at a pace and in an environment that suits their clients.

Is Neurological Physiotherapy suitable for you?
It is possible that you may already have received neurological physiotherapy in hospital or at an outpatient clinic. However such conditions often require o
ngoing treatment to maintain the progress you have made, to help you recover further or to tackle new problems you may encounter.

Input from a neurological physiotherapist would be appropriate if you:

  • Have recently come out of hospital and want to sustain your rehabilitation

  • Are receiving some out patient treatment but want to increase its frequency
  • Have recently been diagnosed and want to begin addressing difficulties you may be having

  • Have had a relapse of a chronic condition

  • Suffered a stroke a while ago and want to tackle problems that are affecting your quality of life now
